In my Community...

At GECRC we believe that our families and our communities are what bring us together, give us identify, help us grow, learn and enjoy life. Therefore, we have asked the following students to share a poem that they developed from a format that helped them develop their language and think about their community in a slightly different way. Each of the following community poems are works from the students currently attending the GECRC after-school program.

: My Country :

If Glen Ellyn were a color, it would be pink and purple,
Like t-shirts, pigs, and birds.
At the park, I always see dogs and trees.
My neighborhood is filled with all different puppies.
I like my BFF.
I dislike smoke.
Glen Purple, Glen Pink, Glen Town.
The sounds of puppies, birds, and garbage trucks.
The people are nice, jolly, and thankful.
My family.
My favorite thing to eat from my Mom’s family is chicken.
Ride my bike. Go swimming.
All the rain.
Often, I think of riding my bike when I am in school.
There is a scent of flowers.
My neighborhood makes me very happy.

Like a pink shirt and red apple.
At the school, I always see my friends.
My neighborhood is filled with puppies, cars, and people.
I like the weather.
I dislike winter.
Good people, good puppies, good food, good animals.
The sounds of puppies, cars, and people.
The people are creative during the holidays.
My mom’s posole.
My favorite thing to eat from Wendy’s is salad.
Playing with my friends.
When I can’t play with my friends.
Trees surround my house.
Often, I think of eating when I come home from school.
There is a scent of food that fills my house.
My neighborhood makes me happy.

Like tomatoes, roses, and apples.
At the store, I always see apples and cherries.
My neighborhood is filled with people.
I like food and vegetables.
I dislike spinach!
Bee. Tree. Dog. Log.
The sounds of people talking.
The people are nice, but sometimes mean.
Funny and cool.
My favorite thing to eat from Burger King is french fries.
Climbing trees.
Some people make me sad.
Dogs, cats, and bushes surround my house.
Often, I think of my Mom when I am having fun.
There is a scent of flowers.
My neighborhood makes me laugh.

At the pool, I always see people.
My neighborhood is filled with cars.
I like pools.
I dislike mean people.
Lots of people. Good things. Clean.
The sounds of people.
The people are awesome.
Motorcycles.
My favorite thing to eat from McDonald’s is chicken nuggets.
Play outside.
My school.
Cars surround my house.
Often, I think of my house when I ride my bike.
There is a scent of potato chips.
My neighborhood makes me feel good.

Like the sun.
At the park, I always see my friends.
My neighborhood is filled with houses.
I like puppies and rabbits.
I dislike people who smoke and do drugs.
Glen Ellyn Pink, Fun, Cool, Awesome, Sweet.
The sounds of birds, cars, dogs barking, people.
The people are funny.
The houses have cool attics.
My favorite things to eat from Country Buffet are pizza, ice cream, fruit, and soup.
Play with my friends.
I don’t have any neighbors that I talk to.
A street surrounds my house.
Often, I think of playing games when I come home from school.
There is a scent of food cooking in my house.
My neighborhood makes me sad, because I want to live in a house closer to Lincoln school.


: What I Love About My Neighborhood :

If Glen Ellyn were a color, it would be green,
Like trees, houses, shoes, bushes, and grass.
At the school, I always see kids and teachers.
My neighborhood is filled with animals.
I like my friends.
I dislike school.
Family, Friends, Mommy.
The sounds of cars, talking, dogs barking.
The people are nice, sweet, and cool.
My family, friends, and others.
My favorite thing to eat from Red lobster is fettuccini alfredo.
Skateboarding.
When I’m the only one who’s awake.
Dogs and people surround my house.
Often, I think of being cool when I skateboard.
There is a scent of French fries in Glen Ellyn,
My neighborhood makes me feel extraordinary.


: Soldier Day :

If Glen Ellyn were a color, it would be green,
Like the army.
At the navy, I always see soldiers.
My neighborhood is filled with tanks.
I like tanks.
I dislike bad guys.
The sounds of people yelling, “Help, help, help!”
The people are good and friendly.
The soldiers fighting.
My favorite thing to eat from the navy is pizza.
Dress as a soldier.
Soldiers surround my house.
There is a scent of flowers.
My neighborhood makes me happy.


: Tree :

If Glen Ellyn were a color, it would be green,
Like leaves.
At the playground, I always see kids.
My neighborhood is filled with people.
I like cars.
I dislike pollution.
Grassy.
The sounds of the wind.
The people are quiet.
My tree.
My favorite thing to eat from home is pizza.
Play video games.
Grass surrounds my house.
Often, I think of video games when I’m in the car.
There is a scent of my neighbor’s food.
My neighborhood makes me happy.

Like jewelry.
At the Fun Fair, I always see stores and games.
My neighborhood is filled with flowers.
I like that a lot of my friends live in my neighborhood.
I dislike mean people.
People, flowers, and houses.
The sounds of my friends screaming.
The people are friendly and fun.
There are a lot of worms and ants.
My favorite thing to eat from China Buffet is pizza.
I like to play Freeze Tag.
I am sad when all my friends leave.
Grass surrounds my house.
Often, I think of a good place to hide when I play Hide and Seek.
There is a scent of flowers.
My neighborhood makes me feel good.
